Management Team

Prof. Amiram Grinvald, CEO
Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board

Prof. Grinvald is the founder of Optical Imaging Ltd., and served as its first CEO until 2005. Together with other company employees he is responsible for the innovation of the company's IP related to the Brain Imager and to the RFI for diagnosis and targeted treatment in the ophthalmic market. He is also responsible for two successful financial rounds and several strategic agreements. He accepted the CEO position again in august 2008. In 1986, Prof. Amiram Grinvald revolutionized the field of brain imaging when he published a paper in the leading journal Nature, describing his newly invented functional brain imaging technique based on intrinsic signals. This application is actually applicable to many others organs of the body. Since then, the use of this technique has shed new light on the understanding of brain functioning in the visual, somatosensory, and auditory systems; and has established a new standard for state-of-the-art cortical imaging technology. Alternative brain imaging technologies, such as PET and f-MRI, still provide only 1% - 10% of the resolving power of Grinvald's Optical Imaging technique, and also lack the ability to image dynamics in the msec domain. Functional Optical Imaging of the eye was the next platform Dr. Nelson, Grinvald and others company employees innovated, from a concept to an FDA approved commercial instrument, to sales. Grinvald's innovations received world wide recognition including: elected member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities (1998); Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1999); The Koerber's 2000 Europe Prize. Elected as a foreign member of the Max Planck Society (2002); guest staff member at the Frontier Research Program at Riken, Japan; Alice and Joseph Brooks International Lecture on the Neurosciences' (Harvard- 2003); The international Dan David Prize for Brain Research (2004).

Dr. Darin Nelson, R&D Product Director

Dr. Darin Nelson graduated from the University of Iowa in 1991 with a B.S. in Microbiology and Biochemistry, and a B.A. in Philosophy. He completed a Ph.D. in Neurobiology at Duke University in 1997, and has been Research Director at Optical Imaging since moving to Israel in 1998.

His primary responsibility with the company is the development of the RFI. He has more than a decade of experience of software development and hardware integration in data collection systems, with particular expertise in biological image acquisition and analysis.

Mr. Kaare Christian, Director, Brain Imager Division OI USA
Mr. Kaare Christian is a Director of OI USA, in charge of software programming for the Brain Imager product lines.
An author of several software books on Unix OS, C and C++, Mr. Christian is an expert programmer and project manager. Among his responsibilities is the assembly and testing of all Brain Imagers, and the technical support in the North American OI branch.

Mr. Ran Lev, COO & Interim CFO

Ran Lev Joined Optical Imaging in 2005. He ensures the smooth and quality operation of Optical Imaging and is responsible for the planning, definition, development, delivery, maintenance, and management of all operational procedures to ensure client satisfaction and improved service delivery, as well as the company's logistics and administration. He assumed the position of Interim CFO on January 2009. Dr. Zvia Burgansky-Eliash, Medical Department Manager

Dr. Zvia Burgansky-Eliash received her M.D. from the University of Tel-Aviv in 1997 graduating magna cum lauda. After specializing in ophthalmology in the Edith Wolfson Medical Center in Israel, she completed a 2-year clinical and research fellowship in the Eye and Ear Institute of Pittsburgh Medical Center. There she sub-specialized in Glaucoma, gaining experience in imaging and visual function testing. Her primary responsibility with the company is developing the clinical application of the RFI.

Mr. Rafael Halfon, Hardware Department Manager

Rafael Halfon graduated from the Tel-Aviv University with a degree in Electronic P Engineering. His experience in hardware engineering spans over thirty years, in which Rafael has gained hands-on experience in the Hi-Tech industry both in the military and civilian sectors. In the last 10 years Rafael has held electronic research and development leadership positions in several start-up companies, both in the hi-tech as well as medical device industries. Before joining the company in May 2007, Rafael directed the electronic development of a complex patient monitoring device based on in-vivo spectrometric examination of tissue through a minimally invasive optical sensor; applying LED light sources and laser technologies. His primary responsibility with the company is managing the development of the RFI and Brain imager hardware.
